Chad is a vast landlocked country in the Central African Sub-Region, covering an area of 1,284,000 square km. It had a population of 12.2 million inhabitants in 2017, 44% of whom are below 14 years. Nearly 78% of the population lives in rural areas. Chad is endowed with diverse natural resources including petroleum, uranium, gold, limestone, neutron, etc. as well as cultivable land. Despite these abundant resources, Chad is still faced with poverty and food insecurity. Close to half of the population (47%) lives below the poverty line. Chad is ranked 186 out of 189 according to UNDP 2017 Human Development Report with a human development index of 0.404. This is below the Sub-Saharan African average of 0.537. With regards to SDG Goal # 6, which ensure access to water for all, Chad access to drinking water is around 61%. This means that around half of the population doesn't have access to safe drinking water. The rate of access to hygiene is one of the lowest globally, around 18%. Infant mortality stands at 85 per 1 000 live births compared with an average of 56 for Sub-Saharan African countries.
