MDBs Release 2024 Joint Water Security Financing Report, Highlighting $19.6 Billion in Commitments to Advance Global Water Resilience

Seville, Spain, 1 July 2025 – Ten leading multilateral development banks (MDBs), including the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), have released the inaugural Water Security Financing Report 2024, setting a strong baseline for collective action on water security and resilience.

The joint report, in which the IsDB was represented by the Economic and Social Infrastructure Department under Global Practice and Partnerships, provides an overview of MDB investments in water supply, sanitation, irrigation, and water resources management approved in 2024, totaling $19.6 billion. Of this amount, $14.4 billion was directed to low-, lower-middle- and upper-middle-income countries. This underscores a shared commitment to ensuring that the most vulnerable populations are not left behind.

The report highlights how MDBs are working together to leverage a wide range of financing instruments, from sovereign and non-sovereign loans to investment grants and guarantees, to accelerate access to safe drinking water and sanitation, strengthen flood and drought resilience, and improve food security and livelihoods.

Beyond financing, the report also underlines efforts to strengthen governance, policy, and institutional frameworks to ensure water investments are sustainable, efficient, and inclusive. The MDBs reaffirmed their determination to scale up collaboration, share knowledge, and promote innovative solutions, including nature-based approaches and climate-resilient infrastructure.

This first annual report will serve as a key accountability tool for tracking progress on the MDBs’ commitments made at COP28 and the One Water Summit in Riyadh and will form the basis for future monitoring of results and impact.
