Results of the IDB Architectural Competition for a Primary School Design in the Sahel Region

IDB education projects implemented in the 54 member countries are always the most priority ones especially in the West African countries.

In this respect, IDB has contributed in financing many primary schools in the Sahelian countries (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Niger, Senegal and others). This contribution is expected to be raised during the next years.

IDB has organized an architectural competition to obtain primary schools model in the rural zone adapted to the Sahelian countries conditions. Those conditions are: (i) climate dominated by a very hot weather and a very strong drought with a violent rain, (ii) zones difficult to reach for a long distance or for the absence of road access facilities and (iii) economic and financial constraints.

The selected models are also applicable for other organizations or institutions which are financing the education projects.

In this framework, 11 representatives held a meeting in June 2002 in Dakar to evaluate the 32 offers received. The representatives were from IDB, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Niger and Senegal.
