12.12.2011, Jeddah, KSA – In its efforts to provide relief to the victims of drought in Somalia, an IDB delegation will shortly be there to implement emergency relief operations funded by a philanthropist and the Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector (ICD), an affiliate institution of the IDB.
The package includes US$ 75,000 for medical equipment for a hospital in the city of Hargeisa, US$ 150,000 for digging and rehabilitating water wells in the province of Mudug and US$ 70,000 for distribution of emergency items amongst the victims.
During his November visit to IDB headquarters, Somali Prime Minister Dr. Abdiweli Mohamed Ali underlined the significance of IDB efforts in bringing assistance to his nation which have facilitated development of infrastructural sectors like education, health and water supplies in addition to emergency relief.
IDB’s relief operations to fight drought in Somalia in the year 2011 amounted to US$ 3.2 million mainly for emergency food and medical supplies, rehabilitating several wells and equipping two hospitals in the city of Mogadishu. The Bank has also signed two agreements with the “Arab Doctors’ Union” to continue the flow of medical support to remote areas of southern Somalia.
