Islamic Development Bank’s Board of Executive Directors Restores Syria’s Membership

Jeddah, 16 March 2025 – In response to an official request from the Syrian government, conveyed by HE Mr. Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani, Syria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, in a letter addressed to HE Dr. Muhammad Al Jasser, President of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the Bank’s Board of Executive Directors has approved the restoration of Syria’s membership in the IsDB. This decision, made during the Board’s meeting on 16 March 2025, ushers in a renewed developmental cooperation and signifies the spirit of Islamic solidarity.

The decision follows Syria’s reinstatement as a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on 8 March 2025 after a 13-year suspension.

Syria’s restored membership in the IsDB Group is a crucial milestone, allowing the Bank to extend support to the country, facilitate recovery and reconstruction efforts, and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s social and economic development.

Syria joined the IsDB in September 1975. By December 2024, the Bank’s total interventions in Syria amounted to approximately US$632 million, which includes US$415.5 million in project financing from the IsDB, US$68.5 million in private sector support, and US$111.1 million from other IsDB-affiliated funds. Additionally, trade finance operations totaled US$37 million, and the Islamic Corporation for the Insurance of Investment and Export Credit provided US$277.5 million in investment and export credit insurance.

The IsDB Group reaffirms its commitment to supporting Syria at this critical juncture, contributing to its economic recovery, and fostering sustainable growth—ultimately ensuring lasting welfare for the Syrian people.
