Islamabad, Pakistan, 20 January 2026 — On the final day of his official visit to Pakistan (18-21 Jan. 2026), Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Vice President (Operations), Dr. Rami Ahmad, conducted a high‑level site visit to the Mohmand Dam and Hydropower Project, a flagship national investment aimed at strengthening clean energy generation, water security, and climate resilience in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.

The visit was hosted by the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) and led on site by Eng. Asim Rauf Khan, General Manager and Project Director, along with senior project and technical teams.

With a total cost of around US$2.2 billion, Mohmand Dam is a multi‑purpose infrastructure project designed to i) Deliver 800 megawatts of renewable hydropower, 2) Generate nearly 2,900 GWh of clean electricity annually, and 3) Store over 1.5 billion cubic meters of water. Upon completion, the project will also support irrigation, drinking water supply for millions of people in Peshawar, and enhanced flood protection for downstream communities.

The project is supported by US$180 million in financing from the IsDB, complemented by co‑financing from partners within the Arab Coordination Group (ACG), including the OPEC Fund for International Development, the Saudi Fund for Development, and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development.

During the visit, Dr. Rami Ahmad reviewed ongoing construction activities following the successful river diversion milestone, which has enabled full‑scale work on the dam body. He was also briefed on the delivery status of major electro‑mechanical and hydraulic steel components financed by IsDB.

The IsDB Vice President Operations commended WAPDA’s leadership and project teams for their efforts, the progress achieved to date, and the forward-looking implementation plan presented. He stressed that the overarching objective is to deliver tangible results and development impact, noting that success will ultimately be measured by how quickly this flagship project is completed and operationalized to support Pakistan’s development priorities.

Dr. Rami Ahmad reiterated that the Mohmand Dam represents a cornerstone investment for Pakistan’s future, enhancing energy security, strengthening water resilience, and supporting inclusive socio‑economic development. He added that IsDB remains proud to be a strategic partner in this landmark project and will continue to support its successful completion.

Once operational, Mohmand Dam is expected to play a pivotal role in Pakistan’s energy transition, water resource management, and climate action agenda, contributing lasting benefits to communities across the region.
