The IsDB RHI undertook a project supervision mission for the Community Based Sanitation project (SANIMAS, IDN0167) in Pangkal Pinang, Bangka Belitung 23-24 Sept 2019. This grassroots level project uses the Community Driven Development (CDD) approach to provide wastewater treatment to urban neighborhoods across around 1,800 locations across 14 provinces of western Indonesia. The project aims to increase the access to sanitation in high-density populations and to reduce open defecation in these areas. IsDB is financing an amount of USD 100 million in the project, which has already provided sanitation connections to more than 37,000 households. In this CDD project, the communities themselves plan, construct and maintain the assets, with technical facilitation and supervision from the Ministry of Public Works and Housing.
In addition to supporting SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation), the project also promotes an innovative, low-cost technological solution to wastewater filtration that will re-use around 50 million plastic bottles (equivalent to around 700 tons of recycled plastic).
