H.E. the President of Islamic Development Bank Group (IsDB), Dr. Bandar Hajjar, visited the Urban Ward/ Kelurahan of Pisangan Timur in East Jakarta, to witness the community-built infrastructure and directly meet with the beneficiaries, including local government officials, community members and microenterprises (self-help groups) on 8 April 2017.

Since the inception of ICDD Phase I through to the current third Phase of ICDD, IsDB has worked with the Ministry of Public Works and Housing on the PNPM Mandiri program to attain a better balance between physical infrastructure improvement and economic growth of the communities in the project areas. Along with the development of physical assets and empowerment of communities in more than 4900 Kelurahan, the ICDD projects have also rolled out a Livelihood Enhancement Program, Islamic Microfinance and Business Development Centers in some of the provinces. The Community Driven Development approach treats communities and their institutions as assets and partners working towards sustainable solutions to the country’s development challenges.

NSUP has been designed to further empower the community and to strengthen local government roles for acceleration of the national ‘100-0-100’ movement (100% connection to water supply, 0% Slums and 100% access to Sanitation facilities) in order to alleviate and prevent slums in urban and peri-urban areas. The NSUP falls under KOta TAnpa KUmuh (Kotaku or City without Slums) national program. The project is implemented in 15 provinces across Western Jawa, Sumatra, and Kalimantan, covering a total of 4,923 Kelurahan in 116 cities/regencies. The project would specifically work to improve community access to appropriate infrastructure in order to alleviate slums based on the 7 plus 1 slum indicators, promote greater collaboration with stakeholders through empowerment of communities and local governments, and improve community welfare by promoting sustainable livelihoods.
