In Tajikistan, Dr. Al Jasser Visits World’s Tallest Dam that Will Serve Regional Energy Security

Dushanbe, Tajikistan, 11 June 2024 – On the 4th day of his official visit to the Republic of Tajikistan, Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) President and Group Chairman, H.E. Dr. Muhammad Al Jasser, took a tour of the Rogun Hydropower Plant in south of the country.

In late April 2024, IsDB approved a US$150 million financing for completion of this tallest rock-filled hydropower dam in the world which, once completed, shall provide nearly 4,000 megawatts of electricity serving the nation and regional countries.

Dr. Al Jasser visited the project site in the company of First Deputy Prime Minister Davlatali Said and Minister of Economic Development and Trade (IsDB Governor) H.E. Zavqi Zavqizoda.

The visit came following the signing of the US$150 million financing agreement on 10th June 2024 between IsDB and the Government of Tajikistan in the capital city of Dushanbe.

“This project exemplifies the successful collaboration between IsDB and the Republic of Tajikistan aimed at comprehensive socio-economic growth and its completion will make Tajikistan a regional energy leader,” H.E. Dr. Al Jasser told reporters after visiting the project site. “This transformative initiative, supported by IsDB, will boost the nation's clean energy capacity, ensure energy security, and drive sustainable economic growth,” the IsDB President added.

Every spring and summer the construction work on the dam comes to a halt as the water current in Vakhsh river reaches peak strength postponing operation until the following winter.

By harnessing nature's power, Rogun HydroPower dam will increase Tajikistan's energy output, reduce reliance on traditional energy sources, and empower communities with reliable electricity access. This strategic project will unlock Tajikistan's vast hydropower potential, shaping a prosperous, eco-friendly future for the country and the region.
