Statement delivered by IsDB President Dr. Bandar Hajjar on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities
More than one billion people worldwide experience some form of disability, including 800 million from developing countries. Many Persons with Disabilities face discrimination, and exclusion from accessing jobs and services, such as education and health care, and they consistently are less well-off than their non-disabled peers in development gains.
The IsDB in line with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities supports ongoing efforts to respond to the urgent need for accelerated action at scale to achieve disability-inclusive development in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Our commitment of leaving no one behind necessitates the inclusion of persons with disability in economic opportunities and development programs, and projects in our member countries to make sure that they achieve the SDG goals.
The world cannot afford to lose the input and services of 15 per cent of its population and let them face exclusions in today’s society. The IsDB will join forces with others to fight discrimination against peoples with disability, and ensure no one is left behind.
