In Jakarta, President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. H. Joko Widodo, Receives Islamic Development Bank President, Graces Launching of IsDB - Financed Hospitals

Jakarta, Indonesia, 30 August 2024 – The Hon. President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. H. Joko Widodo, has received Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) President, H.E. Dr. Muhammad Al Jasser, in the capital, Jakarta.

During the meeting, also attended by the country’s Minister of Health, H.E. Mr. Budi Gunadi Sadikin, the IsDB President expressed appreciation for Ir. H. President Widodo’s leadership, wisdom, and confidence in the Islamic Development Bank and thanked him for the pivotal role he has played in supporting the Bank’s plans and operations, including IsDB’s special capital increase.

Dr. Al Jasser then reiterated IsDB Group’s commitment to supporting the developmental agenda of the Government of Indonesia under the current 2020-2024 Medium-Term Strategy in coherence with IsDB’s 2022-2025 Member Country Partnership strategy (MCPS) for Indonesia.

He said that IsDB Group is ready to support the Energy Transition Mechanism (ETM) Country Platform that will accelerate the energy transition towards Net Zero emissions (NZE) in accordance with the principles of affordability and inclusivity.

Furthermore, he reaffirmed the Bank’s support for spurring cooperation and exchange of experience with Nusantara Capital City Authority (IKN) towards realizing equitable development, tackling climate change, net-zero carbon emissions, and achieving SDGs through the relocation of the capital city from Jakarta to Nusantara which is a visionary initiative of Ir. H. President Joko Widodo.

Other important topics were explored mainly pertaining to further upgrading of health infrastructure in Indonesia, issuance of green Sukuk; digitalization and promotion of FinTech in Islamic Finance; South-South and Triangular Cooperation; boosting the Awqaf sector as well as helping Indonesia mobilize financial resources through enhancing cooperation with the members of the Arab Coordination Group.

Earlier in the day, the IsDB President held a meeting with H.E. Dr. Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Minister of Finance and Governor for Indonesia, where the two sides exchanged views over a wide array of topics including green infrastructure, promoting inclusive human capital development, and supporting Indonesia’s ambitious Vision 2045.

Later in the day, the Hon. President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. H. Joko Widodo, and the Islamic Development Bank President - accompanied by the country’s Health Minister and other senior officials - attended the streamlining of 2 state-of-the-art hospitals financed by the Islamic Development Bank.

At the inaugural ceremonies, the President of the Republic of Indonesia and the Islamic Development President put their signatures on inscriptions in both modern healthcare facilities.

Addressing the launching ceremonies of Dharmais and Persahabatan hospitals, IsDB President, H.E. Dr. Muhammad Al Jasser highlighted the transformative impact of the new hospitals, especially the new child and mother care units, emphasizing the role they play in delivering world-class healthcare to Indonesian families. He also celebrated the addition of over 1,000 beds across six new hospitals in Indonesia through IsDB financing, marking a significant step forward in improving public health and driving sustainable development in the country.

IsDB has – in less than four years - provided US$ 1.4 billion in financing for three health projects, making Indonesia’s Health Ministry the biggest institutional partner for the Bank.

According to Dr. Al Jasser, IsDB is committed to assisting Indonesia in mobilizing financial resources, especially since the country is the 3rd largest shareholder of the Bank.

While in Jakarta, the IsDB President also held meetings with the Minister of Public Works and Housing of Indonesia, as well as H.E. Mr. Perry Warjiyo, Governor of Bank Indonesia, and IsDB Alternate Governor. 

The Republic of Indonesia is a founding member of the IsDB since 1974. To date, IsDB Group’s total financing approvals for the Southeast Asian member country stand at US$7.25 billion for a total of 350 projects and operations.
