IDB, Niger Republic to Speed up the Completion of Kandadji Dam

Jeddah, KSA-08.05.2014 - The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and Niger Republic will speed-up the completion of Kandadji Dam Project, which received financing approval by the IDB Board of Executive Directors (BED) on April 7, 2008.

This was the outcome of the meeting between Niger Republic’s Senior Minister for Planning, Land Management and Community Development, Dr. Amadou Boubacar Cisse (IDB Governor), and the Chairman of the IDB Group, Dr. Ahmad Mohammed Ali. Dr. Cisse was accompanied by Mr. Nomao Ibrahima, Minister of Equipment, and Mr. Soli Housseini, the High Commissioner for Kandadji Dam project.

Dr. Cisse told the IDB Group Chairman at the IDB Group headquarters in Jeddah, that the key purpose of his visit was to discuss the completion of the Kandadji Dam project, which according to him is the ‘child of IDB’; other projects discussed were the Filange Tower Road project, and the development of Waqf (endowment) in Niger Republic.

Dr. Amadou Cisse called for more intervention from IDB in the private sector as well as more presence of IDB field representatives in the country. He thanked Dr. Ahmad Mohamed Ali for his contribution to the development of Niger Republic in various ways, and reiterated the commitment of his country in supporting IDB in any way they can.

In his response, the Chairman of the IDB Group, Dr. Ahmad Mohamed Ali expressed his appreciation for the visit of Dr. Cisse, and assured him that the Kandadji Dam Project is a priority for IDB, and this visit will help both parties to work together in speeding the completion of the project.

Kandadji is a dam being constructed along the Niger River, and is expected to be a multipurpose dam providing hydropower, and controlling the flow of the river. When completed the dam will support economic and local community development.

Niger Republic joined IDB in 1976, and since then it has received approvals from the IDB Group totaling US $ 514million.
