IDB Approves US$ 11 Million Emergency Assistance to Darfur in Western Sudan

Jeddah, 11 July 2007.
H.E. Dr. Ahmad Mohamed Ali, the President of the Islamic Development Bank, stated that the amount approved is set to be a part of a broader relief program for Darfur, to be arranged by Malaysian Prime Minister, the Chairman of the OIC current session, in coordination with the Sudanese Government, IDB and other donors.

Dr. Ali added that the Assistance approved is a combination of a grant, for an amount of one million US Dollars, and Ordinary Loan Operation for an amount of US$ 10 million.

"The Program will provide adequate water supply for domestic and livestock, as well as providing the displaced population with adequate shelter and health related supplies" he concluded.

It is worth mentioning that the total approvals by the Bank in favor of the Republic of Sudan totaled US$ 412 million, covering all development sectors, among which education, health, agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, environment, highways, railways, dams and rural development.
