National Agriculture Subsurface Drainage Project - Phase III

The project's main goal is to contribute to Egypt's food security; to promote sustainable agricultural development and economic growth and improve welfare of the rural populations. The project objectives are to: (i) increase the agricultural productivity of about 90,000 Feddans of irrigated land; and (ii) avoiding yield and production losses on this land, which would result if waterlogging and soil salinity problems were to persist.

The project was successfully completed in 2020 and resulted in:

  • Renewing existing drainage systems: It consists of renewing the existing drainage system by installing a new subsurface drainage system in an area of 68,140 feddans in 5 sectors.
  • Construction of new drainage systems: by installing 2500 km of laterals and 250 km of collector lines in an area of25,000 feddans in 4 land-sectors.
  • Rehabilitation of existing open collectors: 10 km of open collectors and the eventual reconstruction and rehabilitation of about 20 civil structures including bridges, culverts and siphons.
  • Acquisition of equipment for operation and maintenance of subsurface drainage systems, including: 9 Excavators; 7 backhoe loaders; 3 truck tractors & semitrailers, spare patis for existing pipe production lines; One new production line of plastic pipes, fittings and fixtures.

The total estimated cost of the project was initially estimated at USD 54.50 million. The project has achieved cost savings of USD 12.3 million and completed at USD 42.2 million. The total intervention of IsDB in the project amounts to USD 20.00 million.
