The Project involves the expansion of the existing Assiut Power Plant by installing an additional 650 MW conventional Steam Turbine generating station firing dual fuel with necessary auxiliaries. The site is in the vicinity of Assiut city, approximately 375 km South of Cairo.

The total Project cost is US$ 596.4 million and IsDB contribution is US$ 148 million by way of leasing. The overall development objective of the Project is to contribute to socio-economic development through increased availability of electricity supply to consumers. The available of electricity supply from the Power Plant will contribute to meeting the demand. The Project will help increasing the capacity and maintaining the reliability of the power generation system by installing 650 MW.

As of May 31^st, 2021, the Project construction is completed, and the commissioning of the Unit started with 25% of its capacity and the load will be increased gradually by the end of June 2021. The reliability test will be started by the end of July 2021. The Project is expected to be closed by the end of 2021.
