Afghanistan joined the IsDB in 1976. Its subscribed capital is ID9.9 million (0.02% of total IsDB subscribed capital). The first IsDB operation for Afghanistan was approved in December 2004 while the latest approval was in September 2016. Afghanistan is a least developed land locked member country located in Southwest Asia sharing borders with China, Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Afghanistan has over 1400 mineral fields, containing barite, chromite, coal, copper, gold, iron ore, lead, natural gas, petroleum, precious and semi-precious stones, salt, sulfur, talc, and zinc, among many other minerals. The population of Afghanistan is 35.5 million (2017).
